Morning after thistles

It’s probably too late for hangover cures by now, and certainly too late to prevent the hangover in the first place, but just in case you haven’t given up alcohol altogether, here is a ray of hope. There are plenty of herbs – notably ones that taste bitter – that act on the liver. Some stimulate liver function, some simply promote the excretion of bile, and some can tone down, or even eliminate, the inflammatory response that happens when you overdose on alcohol.
The best of these, or at least the one which has the most solid research evidence to back up its traditional use, is Milk Thistle (Carduus marianus or Silybum marianum). If you take it before drinking, it protects the liver from the toxic effects of alcohol. Even if you take it afterwards, it can help to minimise the damage. The best cure, of course, is not to drink too much in the first place, but luckily for us, herbs are not judgmental about their healing effects.
